Industrial microwave heating has its origins in the food industry. Raytheon introduced the first high power microwave heating system is the 1980s, and today there are over a thousand food processing plants around the world using microwave systems for a variety of applications, including:

  • Tempering frozen meats
  • Cooking bacon
  • Preparation of pre-cooked food such as snack products
  • Sterilization and pasteurization
  • Drying bakery products to enhance shelf life
  • Processing raw foodstuffs: fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices

Conveyor belt-type systems are most often used for food processing.   They are specially designed to meet FDA requirements and have full washdown/CIP capabilities.
